Arabian Nights
|

In Yemen, everyone is caught up in qat.
n "Return to the Arabian Nights," writer Bernice Notenboom and photographer Martin Hartley journey from the modern city of Muscat, Oman, to ancient and remote areas of Yemen. In the storied and story-filled Arabian Peninsula, they meet Bedouin, visit historic forts, and stand on the edge of the Empty Quarter, the world's largest sand sea. Here, Notenboom, who is the founder of travel company Moki Treks, interviews locals about chewing qat. A mild stimulant, leafy qat is grown in the Middle East and Africa. It is sold in markets in Yemen, where many adults chew qat. Read more about Notenboom and Hartley's adventures in the May/June 2006 issue of National Geographic Traveler.
