Santorini, Greece
For 24 years my family had a vast and quite ancient summer house on the Greek island of Santorini. From our perch 600 feet [183 meters] up on the cliffs above the Aegean Sea, we looked out on a panorama of beauty and magnificence: the glistening white village of Fira stretching out on either side; the immense volcanic lagoon below, with the peacefully brooding volcano of Kameni at its center; and, across the lagoon, the saddle of the island of Thirasia, where, retreating from its reflection on the water, the sun set every evening in a blaze of orange and purple. Even after 20-odd years, we looked forward to those sunsets. In them, nature held nothing back.
