1. How to Enter for Online Play: To enter the sweepstakes you must first answer the clue(s) in the Wheres Melissa? Contest located at the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELER Web site (www.ngtraveler.com/traveler/mcontest.html) and follow the instructions displayed at the game site. Once you have completed the questions, you will be asked to register by providing your name, e-mail address, and phone number. All registration information requested must be completed and submitted for the registration to be valid. When you register, your information will be electronically stored and entered into the sweepstakes drawing. It will be strictly confidential.
There are five segments, or games, within the Wheres Melissa? Contest. The length of each game varies between four to nine weeks. There will be weekly winners within each game. A grand prize winner will be selected from all correct entries received over the course of all five games. The dates for all five games are as follows:
Game one: December 28, 1998, through February 21, 1999
Game two: February 22 through March 21, 1999
Game three: March 22 through April 21, 1999
Game four: April 22 through June 21, 1999
Game five: June 22 through August 21, 1999
Grand Prize drawing: September 15, 1999
New clues will be presented each week for the current game. Each weeks clue provides one opportunity to enter the sweepstakes for the current game. No more than one entry per week is accepted. You must be the rightful owner of a dedicated e-mail address in order to participate online.
2. How to Play Online: Click the most recent clue, then click Know what this is? Enter the contest! You will be prompted to guess Melissas location and enter your name, e-mail address, and phone number into the sweepstakes drawing. There will be a weekly drawing from all the entries with correct answers every Friday and a grand prize drawing on September 15, 1999. Once you have entered the correct answer for a weekly drawing you are automatically entered in the grand prize sweepstakes. National Geographic Enterprises (NGE, Inc.) is the Sponsor of the sweepstakes.
3. Winner Selection: A random drawing will be held every Friday from among all eligible online entries received that week. Grand prize sweepstakes: A random drawing will be held on September 15, 1999, from among all eligible online entries received over the course of all eight games. Drawings will be conducted by Sponsor, whose decisions are final. All prizes will be awarded. Winners will be notified by e-mail. Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received.
4. Prizes and Approximate Retail Values: Weekly winners will receive a prize not to exceed U.S. $100.00 in value. Prizes will vary for each game. A description of the prizes and their approximate retail value will be featured on the game site. The grand prize will be The Complete NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Collectors Edition: 109 Years of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Magazine on CD-ROM (retail value: U.S. $169.99). No substitutions or transfers of prize are permitted, but Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value in the event that an advertised prize is not available. All taxes on prizes are the sole responsibility of the prizewinner.
5. Eligibility: This contest is open only to legal residents of the United States who are 18 years of age or older at the time of registration or who are playing with the permission of a parent or legal guardian. Employees of Sponsor and its affiliates, their subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising and promotion agencies, and their family members and/or those living in the same household are not eligible.
6. General Conditions: This sweepstakes is subject to the laws of the United States. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply. All prizewinners must execute an Affidavit of Eligibility/Release of Liability/Prize Acceptance Form within 15 days of attempted notification. In the event of noncompliance within this time period, an alternate winner may be selected. Return of any prize/prize notification may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner. Acceptance of prize constitutes permission to use winners name and likeness, including photographs, for advertising and promotional purposes without additional compensation, unless prohibited by law. Entrants grant to Sponsor and its affiliates the right to use and publish their public name in connection with this contest. Sponsor assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, or theft or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, entries. Sponsor is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any e-mail entry to be received by Sponsor on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any Web site, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to entrants or any other persons computer related to or resulting from participation or downloading any materials in this contest. CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT BY A CONTESTANT TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEB SITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE GAME IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS. SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH CONTESTANT TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. Sponsor reserves the right to cancel the contest if it becomes technically corrupted.
7. Winners List: The names of the weekly winners for each game will be posted at the conclusion of each game on the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELER Web site (www.ngtraveler.com/traveler/mcontest.html). The names of all the prizewinners will be posted on or about September 15, 1999, on the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELER Web site.
