Back to the 14th Annual Contest >> Second Prize Six-Day Maine Windjammer Cruise for Two (Trip courtesy of North End Shipyard Schooners and American Airlines) “When I photograph in Amish country in central Ohio, I usually use a long lens so I don’t intrude,” says investment analyst Ginny Gielow of Bay Village, Ohio. “There are some good pictures I’ve passed up because I didn’t want to disturb the subjects. Amish adults usually don’t like to have their pictures taken. But children are easier.” When Gielow came across these children in Holmes County walking up a hill on their way to school one early fall morning, she knew she had the perfect shot. “I was shaking, I was so excited. It had such great light and that gorgeous canopy of gold leaves, and they were carrying their little lunch boxes. Their teacher’s silhouette could be seen through the curtained window.
