Six-Day “Photography at the Summit” Workshop (Trip courtesy of Rich Clarkson and Associates and American Airlines)

This poignant photo taken at Gettysburg National Military Park by Chris E. Heisey, a writer from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, brings together his two passions: the American Civil War and photography. The “Friend to Friend” statue memorializes Union Capt. Henry Harrison Bingham’s aid to old friend Confederate Brig. Gen. Lewis Addison Armistead, who died shortly after the battle. “I have been photographing Civil War memorials for many years. When I step onto a battlefield, I know that I am in a special place. The setting comes alive. And the battle at Gettysburg was such a momentous and pivotal event in our nation’s history. On this particular day, the temperature rose gradually after an ice storm. And the quality of light gave me my best day and my best shot as a photographer. What made it even a little more special was that I took the photo on my birthday.” (Nikon F 100, Nikon 35-80mm zoom lens, Fujichrome Sensia 100 film)
