Third Prize: Bijoy Chowdhurry

Six-day Windjammer Cruise for two on an authentic Maine coast schooner.

Every picture tells a story; some tell two. This image of children playing in Kolshur, a village in the countryside beyond West Bengal, India, speaks of the unselfconscious pleasures of "three kids running joyfully at the bank of a pond, one of them rolling a bicycle wheel beside him," explains photographer Bijoy Chowdhury. But the photograph also recollects past moments that have particular meaning to him. "I clicked this image because it reflects aspects of my forgotten childhood. I was born and raised in a village just like this, and I can relate to this scene," he says. "There was a time when I used to play all day with friends and toys we'd found. Nowadays such play has lost its flavor, but when I saw this scene I was overcome by sensations from my childhood." Nostalgia isn't Chowdhury's only muse, however. The advertising art director, who lives in Nabagram, West Bengal, enjoys traveling to Buddhist monasteries to photograph monks. "I try to extract extraordinary feelings from ordinary subjects," he says. (Pentax K 1000, 28-80mm lens, Fujicolor Superia 200 ASA film.)
