Merit Award: Sarah Jackson

Canon Rebel K2 camera and the National Geographic Photography Field Guide.

A shutterbug since she took her first photography class, 24-year-old Sarah Jackson of Birmingham, Alabama, knew just what to do when this pachyderm charged her truck. "An elephant-Land Rover ramming must be recorded for posterity, so I grabbed my camera," she says. "We'd spent a day in Tanzania's Lake Manyara National Park, near the Rift Valley Escarpment. On our drive back to camp at Mto Wa Mbu, this old elephant lumbered into the road and headed for [but thankfully didn't smash into] us." (Nikon Coolpix 5000, 28-85mm lens, digital image.)
