Thirty-year-old photography student Watcharin Nippita, from Mamaroneck, New York, returned to his native Thailand last year on a picture-taking excursion. While touring the southern city of Yala, he got permission to photograph in a Muslim school. Soft, indirect light from two small windows illuminated the students as they sat on the floor in a semicircle quietly reading the Koran. Nippita was impressed by the overwhelming feeling of serenity in the room and knew a good picture was there to be made. He stood directly in front of the women and took just five frames, at long intervals over 15 minutes to avoid disturbing his subjects. He used a Nikon FE2 with a 50mm lens at f/1.4 and 1/30 of a second on Fuji Velvia film. When I saw the slide, he says, I thought I might have a winner. The mood of the picture matched the feeling in the room that day. | |
