Second Prize: David PincusSeven-day photography workshop for one in the city and environs of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
Serenity and symmetry characterize this unusual, angled view of Paris, but it was a white-capped gendarme, lost amid a swirling jam of multicolored cars, that captivated David Pincus, who was atop the Arc de Triomphe. "While I waited for the gendarme to reappear from the encircling traffic, I spotted this park scene below me," he explains. "Its serenity contrasted with the hustle and bustle around the Arc, and the symmetrical silhouettes of the spindly trees, lampposts, and benches created a 'high noon' feel in the late morning sunspray." While emotions first attract Pincus to a scene, his desire to "provoke curiosity and delight, and to probe beneath the surface meaning and allow the imagination to wander to new places" keeps his photography fresh. "I'm drawn to offbeat or nonliteral shots—those that show snippets of something but suggest the whole." When not teaching at the Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas or writing about management, baseball, or film, Pincus spends time sharpening his photo skills-with a little help from his friends. "Three buddies share my passion for taking pictures. Every two years we convene in a different locale for a week of camaraderie and photography. We call ourselves the Four Foto Phriends and learn from each other by talking about technique and creativity and sharing the results of our efforts."
