After a DNA analysis reveals his ancestors' migration route, American traveler Donovan Webster goes on a quest to meet his relatives in Africa, Uzbekistan, and beyond. Famed photographer Steve McCurry captures it all. Here we showcase portraits of the people they encounter.
The blending of cultures in Samarkand is represented by a trapeze artist with Circus Tashkent (above, left) and an Uzbek elder (above, right). "Living at the crossroads of India, China, Persia, and eastern Europe, the people of Samarkand are a stunning mix of Asian and European," says Webster. "Heavyset or fine-boned, with Asian features, Euro-Russian features, Indian features, or an exotic mix, Samarkand's people are among the handsomest on Earth."
