Outdoor Sports and Activities Prize: Leah Anton, Greenbrae, California

While sailing with her friends in San Francisco Bay one afternoon, Leah Anton snapped this photo of her friends' kids. "Seeing the kids fearlessly climbing on the deck of the heeling boat was a sight to behold," she says. Anton, who has been taking photos since she was a young girl, says the kids were "fantastically delighted" to be on the boat. "It's rare to see kids in outdoor sports photos," she said. "I just love the spirit of this image." Anton loves photography because "photos have a way of granting greater recognition to the moments in your life that may have been otherwise overlooked," she says. "The really great images speak volumes beyond a moment." (Canon EOS 20D with a 28-135mm lens)
