Gardens Prize: Dick Lavine, Austin, Texas
One Earth Explorer Shoulder Bag designed by Bogen for National Geographic.
Dick Lavine was photographing plants in the Wilson Botanical Gardens at the Las Cruces Biological Station in Costa Rica when his wife spotted this katydid, who appeared to "be waving its antennae and (we thought) smiling at us," says Lavine.
Lavine, who is a public interest advocate in Texas, has been taking photographs for 35 years, from Cape Cod on family vacations, to South Africa on business, but has recently taken an interest in abstractions made by patterns and colors in the natural world, and to macrophotography of insects and plants. "I have started examining our backyard from an entirely new perspective," he says. "I hope to develop my skills at seeing the small worlds around us." Lavine hopes to someday photograph in New Zealand, the Galápagos, and Antarctica. (Nikon D70s, Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 zoom lens shot at 70mm, 1/60 sec f/4.5 at ISO 200, on camera flash)
After considering images taken by a wealth of talented amateur photographers, the judges chose these six winners in Traveler's first-ever Great Outdoors Photo Contest. Polish your photography skills at one of our photo seminars, and click here for expert photo tips.
