Scenes of the Natural World Prize: Bob Israel, Brookfield, Wisconsin
One Earth Explorer Shoulder Bag designed by Bogen for National Geographic.
Bob Israel, a New York City native who has lived in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, area for the past 12 years, was intending to shoot the sunrise over the North Point Pier near Bradford Beach in Milwaukee, when he took this photo. "As the sun broke the Lake Michigan horizon, I shifted to shoot the pier from the north side. Immediately, I saw the morning glow on the algae-covered wood of the old pier."
Israel was able to capture the smoothness of the water by using a polarizer and a neutral density filter, combined with a 30-second exposure. Israel, who has a Ph.D. in organic chemistry, loves this photo because he remained open-minded to shift from his original plans for the photo's composition to shoot this image. "On another occasion, I might have missed the shot," he says. (Canon 5D and 24-30mm f/2.8L USM lens with 4x Neutral Density Filter; 30 sec f/13 exposure at ISO 100)
After considering images taken by a wealth of talented amateur photographers, the judges chose these six winners in Traveler's first-ever Great Outdoors Photo Contest. Polish your photography skills at one of our photo seminars, and click here for expert photo tips.
