Islands and Underwater Prize: Martin Tomèík, Vrútky, Slovakia
One Earth Explorer Shoulder Bag designed by Bogen for National Geographic.
Martin Tomèík was testing out his new waterproof camera case one afternoon on a beach in Slovakia's Vel'ká Fatra National Park when he found this frog. He had already taken three rolls of film, when, on his final frame of his last roll, he snapped this image. "It was only a short moment, and of course, lucky," says Tomèík, who is from the district of Martin, Slovakia ("I am Martin from Martin," he jokes). His favorite places to photograph are Africa, Latin America, and Ukraine.
Tomèík has been photographing family and friends for many years, but offers this advice for taking truly wonderful images: "If a photographer opens his eyes and heart, then he'll have good luck." While he has photographed on many different continents, he says this is his favorite shot. (Nikon F80, Nikkor 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D AF zoom lens, SEALUX waterproof case, 1/60 sec f/5.6 exposure with Fuji Superia 100 film)
After considering images taken by a wealth of talented amateur photographers, the judges chose these six winners in Traveler's first-ever Great Outdoors Photo Contest. Polish your photography skills at one of our photo seminars, and click here for expert photo tips.
