iders gallop along the cooled lava slopes below Mount Etna near Sicily's eastern shore. Etna—one of the world's most active volcanoes and Europe's highest at 10,898 feet—looms over the city of Catania in the province of the same name. "This picture captures the atmosphere of my youth," says photographer Alessandro Saffo, "the energy of Etna, the colors, the smells always changing at any eruption. These riders look like ancient knights, with a special feeling for space and freedom."
