he siren call of wave action brings out surfers and their surfboards at Hot Water Beach, on the North Island, a popular, yet sometimes dangerous place to ride the waves. This beach on the Coromandel Peninsula was named for hot pools that sometimes seep through the sand, a reminder of New Zealand's location in a geologically active region.
