Merit Prize: Kai Clemen, Vancouver, British Columbia
Nikon Coolpix S-Series Camera and a Bogen National Geographic Photo Package
Kai Clemen took this photograph during a two-month overland truck trip in South America. "This image is in Bolivia on the Altiplano near Laguna Verde," says Clemen. "I asked the driver to stop. I liked the drama of the oncoming storm and the hostile landscape. It highlights the vulnerability and scale of our little truck." Clemen, who works as a freelance art director and designer in Vancouver, says he grew up going through his parents' huge collection of National Geographic magazines. "I was always fascinated by the maps and images of all the foreign places and often wondered what people were doing there," he says. (Nikon F100, 24-100mm zoom lens, Fuji Provia 100F film) Bogen Prize Package includes National Geographic Tundra Monopod, National Geographic Tundra Tripod with three-way head, and Earth Explorer Medium Shoulder Bag.
This year's 18th annual photo contest received nearly 15,000 entries, up from some 10,000 last year. Start polishing your skills early with one of Traveler's photo seminars and look for the announcement of our next contest in May 2007.
