One of Provence's hilltop villages perchés—perched villages—that date to the Middle Ages, Le Beaucet sits in the Vaucluse hills under the once-watchful gaze of its medieval castle. "There are so many perched villages in Provence," says photographer Catherine Karnow. "I thought Le Beaucet a stunning one." Not to miss: the 12th-century church, the Hermitage of St. Gens a mile (1.6 km) away, the baked goods at the Boulangerie Artisanale, and a meal at the rustic Auberge du Beaucet.

Read more about this region of France in "Insiders Provence," in Traveler's April 2006 issue.
