odern buildings are interspersed among 19th-century structures on Istiklal Caddesi, a shopping street in the Beyoglu district of Istanbul. It was pedestrianized in 1990, with only old-fashioned trams—no cars—running along the street. "The combination of ancient history and modern, trendy lifestyles is one of the reasons that Istanbul is among my favorite cities," Mohan says.
