Built on more than a million pilings, the magisterial Church of Santa Maria della Salute rises on Dorsoduro, one of Venice's six sestieri, or districts. A baroque masterpiece designed by Venetian architect Baldassare Longhena, the church was commissioned as an offering to God when the plague devastated Venice in the 1600s. "The light was pretty there," says Kochey, who made this photograph in the morning. "I tried to incorporate the foreground and the church, though I was a bit limited with the angle."
