Students enjoy a light moment during a visit to Venice's Ghetto, the oldest of its kind in the world. Once home to 4,000 Jews crowded into narrow apartment buildings, the quiet neighborhood is today a cultural and historical site, with three synagogues, a kosher restaurant, and a Jewish community museum. "It's off the beaten path," says Kochey. "Very beautiful and relaxed."
