Robert Rubin
Montana
There is a wonderful river in Montana that runs into the Smith. At the point where the rivers join there is nobody there. Plain and simple, nobody there. We were staying at this little fishing lodge on the Smith and discovered that one of the guests had purchased the land at the rivers fork, so we took a truck down through the woods, past caverns, and into a little valley with steep drops on either side. I waded upstream for about a mile, fishing all the way. To get there you must go directly down the Smith, which is not an easy thing to do. We took an overland vehicle on winding paths to get there. There you chase rainbow trout in the stream, and the fish fight enormously well. I would fish with a two-weight rod, and casting was tricky with fish so powerful. It was remarkable.
Robert Rubin is a former Treasury Secretary of the United States.
