PACKING FOR A DINOSAUR HUNT

QuickTime preview of “Dinosaur Hunters” animation!

A National Geographic Television film crew, led by producer Lisa Truitt, spent six weeks in Mongolia’s Gobi desert charting new discoveries for the show “Dinosaur Hunters.” On such a long and arduous shoot, each crew member takes only one personal bag. Who plans and packs the additional cases (54 for the Gobi shoot) containing film equipment, food, and camping gear? In this case, it was production manager Sharon Parbs. She remembers:

“I knew our crew wasn’t going to be able to bathe for the entire shoot, so I sent them off with thousands of baby wipes! The crew hired a local cook, but I packed some foodstuffs like peanut butter and cans of tuna. I’ve also started including spicy sauces so the crew can liven up bland food, or hide the taste, if necessary. I sent along a Frisbee, because I figured the Gobi is really just a big beach! And I cooked up a surprise for the crew with Lisa Truitt, the producer: videos of Lawrence of Arabia and Jurassic Park  to watch on the small video playback monitor they usually use to check their own footage!”
