EXPLORER vs. the Volcano

An active volcano is one of the more volatile subjects you can film. Cameraman Peter Schnall (right) keeps his distance while shooting footage of Montserrat’s Soufriere Hills Volcano, which has erupted several times in less than two years.

Associate producer Kevin Krug recalls that this shoot required more than the standard supplies of film and equipment: “I carted around a case of survival gear—gas mask, medical kit, fresh water—every day, everywhere we went.”

The well-prepared crew was in Montserrat filming for the National Geographic EXPLORER film “Volcano Island.”
