Mummy Quiz

4. What type of container served as the body’s eternal “home” ?

Answer: b. sarcophagus.

The sarcophagi of royalty were rectangular coffins hewn from two blocks of granite—one for the box and one for the lid. They were elaborately carved to imitate buildings. The cartonnage was a decorative wrapping layer resembling papier-mâché. Canopic jars were used to store the important organs—the stomach, intestine, liver, lungs—so they would be preserved for use in the afterlife. (From the EXPLORER film “Mr. Mummy.”)
