THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL SHINES AT COVETED DESIGN INDUSTRY AWARDS

Washington, D.C., July 27, 1998

Not only does the National Geographic Channel have award-winning programming; it has award-winning graphics and image campaigns as well. The Channel, only 10 months old, is honored to have won awards at three major design competitions. The National Geographic Channel’s identity package is comprised of both on-air and print and was created with the collaboration of National Geographic Channels Worldwide’s creative team, PMcD Design, Elias Associates Inc, and Air Force One.

At Promax in Toronto, the National Geographic Channel won a Gold Award for International Brand Campaign and a Silver Award for Promotional Animation. The animation consists of computer-generated rotoscopes of a polar bear, hummingbird, kayak, and ants, moving through the yellow border. Bob English, Creative Director at Lee Hunt Associates in New York, called the National Geographic Channel’s creative package, “a classic for the future.” He went on to say, “It (PMcD’s design) not only uses the superb footage available without resorting to multi-layering but also brands the footage clearly as National Geographic.”

At the Broadcast Design Awards, also held in Toronto, the National Geographic Channel’s identity package was lauded with 24 Silver and Bronze Awards in both on-air and print categories.

Thirdly, CTAM held its awards ceremony in Chicago as part of its national marketing summit. Here, the National Geographic Channel won top recognition—a Gold Mark Award for International Distributors/Programmers, Image/Awareness Campaign.

Said Mary Hicks, Creative Director, National Geographic Channels Worldwide, “The exciting and distinctive look of this package has been achieved because of a great team. Congratulations goes out to Patrick McDonough and his design team, Elias Associates Inc, and Air Force One for their work on the Channel’s graphics and image campaigns.”

Sandy McGovern, President of National Geographic Channels Worldwide, said, “National Geographic prides itself on its visual imagery and in this campaign we have successfully wed National Geographic’s unique images and its signature yellow border. I am proud that the National Geographic Channel’s identity package was singled out for high achievement in these prestigious design competitions, particularly since the Channel is only 10 months old.”
