National Geographic Television press release

Millions Tune in to National Geographic Channel on its First Birthday

London, August 10, 1998

The National Geographic Channel (NGC), one of the fastest growing television channels in Europe, will be celebrating its first anniversary on September 1, 1998.

After just one year the National Geographic Channel has seen an enormously fast expansion to a subscriber base of fifteen million households in Europe and eight million in Asia. National Geographic Channel’s award-winning programming showcases the spectacular images of exploration and adventure, wildlife, people and cultures, and natural phenomena that are integral to National Geographic’s heritage.

Jerry Glover, managing director of NGC said: “We are delighted to have achieved so much within just one year of our first broadcast. I strongly believe that NGC programming is the best in its field, with compelling storytelling, beautiful imagery, and diverse topics. National Geographic Channel offers a different perspective on the world in an exciting, informative way, and our filmmaking teams go to extraordinary lengths to ensure the viewer sees results that are at the cutting edge of the documentary genre.”.

National Geographic Channel is now one of the fastest growing channels in Western Europe. In Poland, in less than two months National Geographic Channel reached number four in viewing share among all cable and satellite channels. NGC is the number two ranked cable channel in Australia, as well.

As its first anniversary approaches, the staggering success and popularity of the channel continues. In July 1998 the National Geographic Channel launched in place of NBC Europe to over 11 million subscribers and in place of NBC Asia to over 7 million subscribers. In September 1998 the channel will be available in Europe on 4 different satellites in over 25 different countries-broadcasting in English, Polish, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish.

The National Geographic Society was founded in 1888 and is the world’s largest nonprofit scientific and educational organization. Since then the Society has funded over 6,000 expeditions all over the world. The Society’s dedication to quality and accuracy, its involvement in science and exploration, its editorial resources, and its networks of world-class scientists and filmmakers make National Geographic programs truly unique.
