National Geographic Channel Debuts in Amsterdam

The National Geographic Channel has been added to the basic cable tier for all cable households in the Netherlands city of Amsterdam. As of May 1, 1999, more than 400,000 Amsterdam cable households now receive the Channel via cable company A2000. The expanded access means that the National Geographic Channel is now available in more than 4.5 million households in the Netherlands.

The Dutch National Geographic Channel was introduced in September 1998 and broadcasts Dutch-oriented programming with Dutch subtitles and Dutch spoken announcements and commercials. The Dutch National Geographic Channel showcases high caliber programming from National Geographic Television as well as from other distinguished filmmakers and production/distribution companies from around the world, focusing on such topics as natural history, adventure, science, exploration, and culture.

Since its launch in September 1997, the National Geographic Channel has become one of the fastest growing channels in the world. The Channel is available in 54 countries, broadcasting to over 41 million homes and in nine languages. National Geographic Channel Europe currently reaches over 16 million homes in 20 European countries with broadcasts in seven languages.

The National Geographic Society is the world’s largest nonprofit scientific and educational institution with 10 million members worldwide. Founded in 1888 for the increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge, the Society reflects the world through magazines, books, maps, films, television, and interactive media, all of which are being aggressively expanded worldwide.
