Light barely penetrate more than a few hundred feet in water so we can\u2019t see the bottom.</p><p class=\"MsoNormal\">But sound\u2026 (beep, beep, beep)\u2026does.</p><p class=\"MsoNormal\">Measure the time it takes for sound to make the roundtrip from surface to bottom and you can calculate distance.</p><p class=\"MsoNormal\">And in 1951, while pinging sound across the Pacific, scientists honed in on the deepest spot\u2026210 miles southwest of Guam\u2026in the Mariana Trench.</p><p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sonar reveals a 15-hundred mile gash in the earth\u2026formed as the Pacific tectonic plate collides and dives under the Philippine plate.</p><p class=\"MsoNormal\">The trench\u2019s deepest point, the Challenger Deep, is 36,070 feet down.</p><p class=\"MsoNormal\">Only 2 people ever made it here. That was more than 50 years ago.</p><p class=\"MsoNormal\">James Cameron will do it alone.</p>",
