Amizade has been working in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service at the OTO Ranch for the past ten years. Since 1995 The Gallatin National Forest has sponsored historic preservation work at the site. Approximately 24-60 volunteers lend their efforts to the OTO service program each summer, and they work under the direct supervision of Forest Service preservation specialists.
The OTO Ranch is significant because it was one of the first guest ranches that was built in the American West. A man by the name of Dick Randall began operating the OTO just before the turn of the twentieth century with hopes that it would introduce Easterners to a western experience with its breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife. When Amizade began its work with the US Forest Service, many of the OTO’s historic buildings were in danger of being torn down. Since then, volunteers have not only restored over half of the buildings, but during the process of historic preservation, they have also helped make the area safer for wildlife by cleaning up the area around the OTO. Through the work of its volunteers, Amizade has helped restore—both historically and environmentally—a vital part of the American West.
