What is BioBlitz?

Part scientific endeavor, part festival, part classroom, the BioBlitz brings together leading scientists, naturalists, and adventurers from around the country with teams of volunteers of all ages. Together they will comb the park’s 150,000+ acres, observing and recording as many plant and animal species as possible in 24 hours. Volunteers of all ages are needed to count the bugs, butterflies, birds, bats, wildflowers, and other animals that make the Santa Monica Mountains their home.

The BioBlitz takes place over a 24-hour period—from noon to noon—to allow for viewing of nocturnal animals as well. The winning family can select hours of participation, depending on
interest and ages.

This year's BioBlitz takes place on May 30-31, 2008, in Santa Monica, California. BioBlitz events take place in other parks nationwide throughout the year.
