The Wyoming Dinosaur Center was founded in 1994, and opened its doors to the public the following year. Excavation of their quarries is carried out from late spring through early fall. WDC quarries are some of the most productive in all of North America, with several thousand bones excavated. Approximately one dozen people support the Dig-for-a-Day program, which involves customer interaction and training along with an extensive effort to maintain the highest scientific and educational standards to preserve the data that the program generates. The Center has also expanded its Kids Dig! program, which allows youngsters from across the country to experience all parts of museum work. The volume of fossils that are prepared for study and display continues to grow with each field session.

One year during a kid’s dig, a young girl was excavating in a far corner of the quarry and became discouraged because she wasn’t finding anything. Program staff suggested she move to another area of the quarry and try again, to which the little girl replied that she was happy where she was and wanted to stay even though she didn’t find anything. About 30 seconds later, the little girl yelled, “I think I found something!” Turns out she had exposed most of a Diplodocus tooth—a very important discovery for the scientific story of the quarry. It just goes to show persistence really does pay off and the young girl will certainly remember that moment for the rest of her life.
