Global Volunteers has been working in Montana since 1999. Due to the program’s popularity and success, it now counts six teams per summer, with a total of 120 members lending their service from May through August. The largest team ever was 33 people!

Volunteers are based in Browning, MN and serve throughout the 1.5-million-acre Blackfeet Indian Reservation located just outside of Glacier National Park. The Blackfeet Tribe, who once inhabited areas in both the U.S. and Canada, played an important role in the renowned Lewis and Clark Expedition. They are a very welcoming group of people who truly appreciate the efforts of Global Volunteers and enjoy teaching volunteers all about their culture

Work projects include providing companionship to residents of the Senior Care Center and the Assisted Living Facility; participating in youth empowerment programs; painting, building and repairing playgrounds; and working on beautification projects. Volunteers have even had the chance to visit a Blackfeet language immersion school and work with instructors at the Blackfeet Community College.

This project attracts volunteers of all ages as long as they are interested in Native American history, spectacular scenery, a variety of work projects and, family-friendly recreational opportunities. No prior experience is necessary and most volunteers have never been on an Indian reservation prior to their service.

Volunteers participate in this program for many different reasons. One volunteer in particular has even returned four times, because she wants to bring her daughter and grandchildren. She feels that children need to see another culture where people live differently and have the chance to learn some wonderful things that offer growth and understanding. Another volunteer encouraged his entire extended family to serve on a service program together at the same time.
