Spectators gather near a bonfire during the midsummer celebration of Juhannus in Helsinki, Finland. Juhannus is linked to both the pre-Christian celebration of the summer solstice and the Christian Feast of St. John. During Juhannus huge bonfires like the one above are lit in villages and towns; traditionally, the boats no longer fit to sail are consumed in the flames. Finland, because of its northern latitude, has less than three hours of darkness during this time.
