The Chimps of Goualougo

“The reason Goualougo chimps are special is that ... we didn’t see [any other] chimps that even came close to being as naive and as unafraid of humans.

“You do this duiker [a small antelope] call to call in chimps ... [Fay performs the call]. ... They think it's a free meal, [but then] when they see humans, most of the time they just run away, because ... they know what humans are all about.

“But here in the Goualougo they just kind of climb up trees and will sit there for hours and just look at you and wonder what you are.”
