Smita Sharma is an independent photojournalist. Her work primarily focusses on human rights, gender, health and social issues and has been published in various international publications including The Washington Post, The New York Times, BBC World, TIME, The Globe and Mail, Spiegel, Channel 4, and Caravan Magazine, among others. Her work has been screened and exhibited in various countries including the United States, India, Cambodia, Myanmar, South Korea, France, United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia.
Sharma is a Getty Images grantee and an IWMF Reporting Fellow. She received the Indian of the Year award in 2017 and Exceptional Women of Excellence award from the Women Economic Forum in 2018. In 2019, she won the One World Media Awards for her film Rebels With a Cause at BAFTA, London.
Sharma graduated in photojournalism and documentary photography from the International Center of Photography, New York, in 2013 and has a postgraduate diploma in journalism from the University of Pune. Born and raised in Shillong, India, she has lived and traveled for work in South Asia, Africa, Latin America and the United States.
