Experience the extraordinary intersection of ancient and modern on the bustling streets of Naples, home to some of Italy’s greatest treasures. From grand palazzos to original Neapolitan pizza, discover architectural marvels, celebrated artwork, and classic southern Italian cuisine as you explore the Centro Storico and waterfront. Learn about the complex layers of Naples past from local guides while walking the cloisters of a Renaissance-era monastery and observing artifacts in the National Archaeological Museum. The order of activities will alternate depending on whether you join before or after your expedition cruise aboard the Sea Cloud.
This morning, arrive in Naples, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited urban areas. Settled by the Greeks and expanded by the Romans, Naples is now a thriving center of Italian culture. Venture into the Centro Storico—the historic city center, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site—to explore lively streets and spectacular sites. Visit the Duomo, the grand cathedral built in the 14th century and mentioned in Boccaccio’s literary masterpiece Decameron. Continue to the Basilica of Santa Chiara, artfully reconstructed after the bombing of Naples during World War II, and marvel at colorful tilework depicting 18th-century life. In the Sansevero Chapel, view the astonishingly realistic marble sculpture of the “Veiled Christ.” Savor traditional Neapolitan cuisine during lunch at a local restaurant; then enjoy a free afternoon to stroll the bustling waterfront, step into exquisite churches, or seek out delicious pizza in its place of origin.
Delve into the extraordinary collections of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, a repository of some of the greatest sculptures, ceramics, mosaics, and jewelry of ancient Rome. Enriched by finds from nearby Herculaneum, Pompeii, and other excavation sites, the museum includes sculptures of Hercules and Venus, as well as the Farnese Bull, considered the largest single sculpture ever recovered from antiquity. In the afternoon, head to the hilltop district of Vomero, which overlooks the Centro Storico and the Gulf of Naples, to visit the Certosa di San Martino. Now a museum, this former monastery was built in the 14th century and contains renowned works of art and architecture. Enjoy stunning views of Naples over a glass of limoncello at a nearby overlook. This evening, dine on traditional dishes while watching the sun set over the waterfront.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport to connect with your flight home, or embark the Sea Cloud to continue your exploration.
