TORN BY THE STORM

Thrashed and pummeled by a hurricane off the Florida coast, the jury-rigged Concepción limped towards Puerto Rico. Confidence truly bottomed out when the ship’s commander, Vice Admiral Juan de Villavicencio, discovered that neither his senior pilot, Bartolome Guillen, nor Guillen’s assistant, Mathias Destevan Arte, had ever sailed these waters and would have to rely on sketchy charts to guide them.
