Stunning Images Show the Impact of Man on Nature

The winners of the first Por el Planeta conservation photography competition have been announced.

Some of the world’s top photographers competed in a new international competition to raise awareness of conservation issues. The Mexico City-based Por el Planeta competition awarded $300,000 across 22 prizes, in categories for professionals, amateurs, youth, and specific types of photos, from underwater to depictions of Mexico.

The Por el Planeta competition opened in March. There were nearly 30,000 photos submitted by nearly 3,000 photographers from 88 countries.

“We believe photography is more than just light, beautiful pictures or perfect proportions,” photographer and contest director Cristina Mittermeier said when launching the competition. “It is also a vehicle for real change.”

Money raised from the contest entrance fees help support conservation. The National Geographic Society is a media partner.
