Competition recognizes powerful examples of nature photography.

The National Audubon Society has announced the winners of its seventh annual photo contest, representing the best in photos of birds. More than 1,700 people entered more than 7,000 images for judging.

Entrants came from all 50 states and 6 Canadian provinces, as well as the District of Columbia. Judges included professional photographer Melissa Groo and bird guide author Kenn Kaufman.

Criteria included technical quality, originality, and artistic merit.

"All are wonderful. What a difficult job to judge," a reader commented on Audubon's page.
