See some of February's most popular photos

Every day, we feature an image chosen from thousands submitted to our photo community, Your Shot. Here are some of the month's highlights.

My favorite photos from this month compelled me to take a moment and appreciate the dedication the photographers of our Your Shot photo community showed in their pursuit of the best shot.

Kyle Miller was right alongside other members of the Wyoming Hotshots as he documented their efforts to suppress a wildfire in South Dakota. Tom Cannon dove into the ocean depths and followed a whale shark to document the moment it swam through a baitball. After an initial attempt, Amy Osness and her son waited patiently for the next supermoon to capture the perfectly-framed image she originally envisioned.

These pictures, along with many others featured on Photo of the Day, showcased the perserverance sometimes neeeded to get the kind of photo that makes you sit back and say, "Wow!"

Francis Rivera produces Photo of the Day, a curated look at photography from National Geographic’s photo community, Your Shot . Melody Rowell writes and researches the captions. Submit your photos and you could be published online or in our magazines. See the highlights from previous months here.
