Denmark: Jutland Beach Areas

99 Coastal Destinations Rated: In the Balance

Score: 61

Historic towns with half-timbered facades occasionally interrupt long stretches of grass-crowned sand dunes here along the windswept shoreline of Denmark's mainland. Though the area offers enormous aesthetic appeal, its tourism infrastructure is somewhat inadequate and farming has harmed its ecology.

Here is a representative sampling of additional anonymous comments from the panelists. They are not necessarily the views of the National Geographic Society:

"The wildness and natural beauty of the north is striking. By contrast, beaches in east Jutland are lined with dated camper vans and beach bungalows. Fortunately, most commercial attractions, like zoos and theme parks, have been developed in the inland zones."

"Aesthetically pleasing but short on affordable accommodation."

"Jutland is beautiful and harsh with white beaches, impressive sand dunes and cliffs, forests, and heather-covered hills. Traditions are maintained."

"A stunning area, but farming has brought environmental pressures."
