Merit Prize: John Dranchak, Long Beach, California

Nikon Coolpix S-Series Camera and a Bogen National Geographic Photo Package

John Dranchak—until recently, an aerospace engineer in Long Beach, California—took this image in Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, where he was traveling with friends. Dranchak says the guide is holding onto his friend's belt to keep him from falling into the water. "I was afraid to go down there and stand in that crevasse," he says. "I walked up to the top of the ridge, and I thought, 'This is just gorgeous.' The colors of the image caught my eye." (Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W1 digital camera, built-in lens) Bogen Prize Package includes National Geographic Tundra Monopod, National Geographic Tundra Tripod with three-way head, and Earth Explorer Medium Shoulder Bag.

This year's 18th annual photo contest received nearly 15,000 entries, up from some 10,000 last year. Start polishing your skills early with one of Traveler's photo seminars and look for the announcement of our next contest in May 2007.
