It was a suicide mission, complete with killer bees, assault rifles, and crocs. But to eco-activist Bruce Hayse, true wilderness is worth the risk. In 1999 he led a ragtag band down central Africa's 400-mile (644-kilometer) Chinko River to document the wildlife not yet taken by the poachers who have overrun the region.
