It was a suicide mission, complete with
killer bees, assault rifles, and crocs. But to eco-activist Bruce Hayse, true wilderness
is worth the risk. In 1999 he led a ragtag band down central Africa's 400-mile (644-kilometer) Chinko
River to document the wildlife not yet taken by the poachers who have overrun the region.
Writer Michael Finkel and photographer Chris Anderson joined Hayse's team
for ADVENTURE. The results are the March/April 2000 article "Crazy in the Congo" and this
online exclusive. Here, Finkel reveals the stories behind previously unpublished images by Anderson.
