image: Colonel Wallace Sterling

The municipal leader of Moore Town carries the title "colonel," a name harkening back to the traditions of Maroon resistance. The current colonel, Wallace Sterling, is pictured here holding seeds known as warrior nuts.

"We went and visited with Wallace Sterling, the ‘Colonel,' at his house. He took us for a hike to Nanny Falls—he's pretty well educated, a politician.

"He's the one who got them to build the steps down by the falls. He has taken over and really tried to put infrastructure in and increase the cash flow in the community.

"He was into building schools, hospitals, and clinics. He was pretty sharp—a good thing for the area. A lot of people would have been just selling off the exotic hardwoods; he was saying things like ‘Ecotourism is a viable alternative to cutting down the rain forest.'"
