High Times on the Peyote Trail

A man returns a crucifix to a Huichol village chapel.

"After the animal sacrifices, the crowd moved in procession across the square with this figure of Christ on the cross. Then people returned to their houses taking various parts of the carcasses to prepare as offerings for the gods.

"I saw this man walking across the square to return the blood-splattered cross to the chapel."

—Photographer Rachel Cobb

"I waited until he came into the entrance to make the picture because I wanted to show the blood-soaked chapel entrance with the Christ figure.

"I liked the way he took his hat off before going inside—sort of a nod to Catholicism."
