Fire Walking With the Lava Junkies

A lava breakout from newly cooled rock

"If I stepped on the gray rock in this photo, it would feel like stepping into a fire. You can pass over it if you move really quickly. You just dance along.

"Radiant heat applied to the skin is scorchingly hot. Until I learned what I was doing, I would come away from shooting some of these breakouts with [something like] a very bad sunburn. After 30 seconds close to one of these hot ones, I had first-degree burns."

—Photographer James Balog

Photography Notes

  • Camera: Nikon D100
  • Lens: 80-200mm
  • Shutter speed: 1/125
  • Aperture: f/8.0
  • Time of day: 7:00 a.m.

"A breakout develops pretty quickly. If you're not ready to go, you'll simply miss your shot. It took me a good week to start to develop an eye for where a breakout was likely to happen, and how long it would last."
