Fire Walking With the Lava Junkies

The deceptive calm of an extremely hot flow

"This shot may look like a dreamy day on the side of a volcano, but it was really wicked. I am standing downwind of an a'a flow, which is notorious for emitting an exceptional amount of radiant heat. It was really, truly ferociously hot.

"We left our packs on the coolest rocks we could find while I got this shot. When we returned, the buckles had melted and our CamelBaks had sprung leaks. We had no water for the rest of the day.

"The central fascination in this picture is how this airy substance of light and cloud and sky is mirrored in this very heavy substance of rock and molten lava. There's a real echoing of form and texture between the top half of the picture and bottom half of the picture."

—Photographer James Balog
