Reader Phillip Roberts arranged a ten-day customized safari in Botswana's Okavango Delta through Bush Camp Safaris (www.bushcampsafaris.com) for [U.S.] $1,000.

"My wife and I were the only ones on this safari, yet we were greeted by a guide, cook, camp assistant, and porter when we landed on the delta's dirt airstrip. We moved every two days by dugout canoe and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the tent and mattresses provided. We had salads, fresh-baked bread, and hearty, delicious main courses.

"The safari crew had never heard of 'pampering,' but that's exactly what they were doing. At one site, seven lions roared through our camp, and at another, elephants regularly dined on ivory palms just ten yards [nine meters] away.

"I learned to pole my way through the delta's crocodile-filled channels, to catch our dinner in the river with nets, and to identify numerous birds. At night, we sat around the campfire exchanging stories about ourselves and our cultures.

"We were sad to see the bush plane returning for us. We had made friends for life."
