My (Almost) Private Patagonia

Unloading gear for a base camp on the shores of Lago Leones

"The float plane had to make multiple trips to bring our group and our gear to this spot. Because this was an exploratory trip, we spent the next couple of days just going where our impulses led us.

"We carried all our gear with us, which for me in particular was a huge logistical challenge. Since we planned to travel by kayak, we didn't have to carry everything around on our backs, which was nice."

Photography Notes

  • Camera: 4x5 Linhof Master Technika, with 6x12 back
  • Lens: 90mm
  • Shutter speed: 1/15
  • Aperture: f/32
  • Time of day: morning

"I took this panoramic shot on a 4x5 using a 6x12 back—which is one of those old fashioned cameras with a bellows where you had to put black cloth over your head to focus. Even though it's old technology, the quality—the richness and detail of the photo—is actually higher.

"This photo is about all our stuff, getting our stuff there, getting ourselves there, to begin exploring. The 4x5 camera lets you selectively focus on certain areas. I chose to leave the boat out of focus in this shot, but I probably shot it in a lot of different ways."
